Digital Art

Digital Artwork ... it's like catnip!

I'll be the first to admit, I have spent a LOT on art supplies over the years, and some of them can be downright messy or time consuming - or both. And nothing sucks more then spending the money to try out a new medium, only to find out that you hate it, or that you don't have the time or space for it.

So when I discovered Procreate I was instantly in love with it. In the confines of my iPad I can do everything from Copics to watercolors, oils and acrylics - with an endless amount of colors at my disposal. I can carry my art with me anywhere - which means that if I am struck with inspiration while sitting waiting for the doctor then I can just dive right in.

That being said - you may notice that some of my digital art looks, well maybe less advanced, then some of my oils and acrylics, and some look much better. There is a learning curve for this, and I am still hard at work learning all the ins and outs. As long as people keep creating brushes for the app I am going to keep trying anything and everything!

My Gear:

Here is my setup that I am currently using, along with affiliate links to Amazon in case you want to purchase your own. If you DO decide to purchase using the links that I provide please know that I earn a small percentage of the sale. The support allows me to continue creating artwork and purchasing brushes!

Tablet:  iPad Pro 12.9 256GB in Space Gray

I'm not going to lie, this baby is pretty pricey! But between work, school and my art it was an investment and I get a lot of use out of it. There are certainly smaller more affordable versions that have less memory, but I think of it like I do with most electronics - get the largest that you can afford. Rarely have I ever said 'boy, I wish that I got a smaller, cheaper version" but I have often said - "boy I wish that I had gone a bit bigger".  If you are serious about your art then go big, or go home - right?

Pencil:  Apple Pencil 2nd Generation

A stylus is a stylus, right? Nope - turns out a case of having the right tools really mattering. Sure, there are off-brand stylus options that work passably well. At the end of the day though, the Apple Pencil is FAR superior. When creating things like watercolor art, the pressure sensitivity that the Apple Pencil has is the absolute best that there is. There are two generations of Pencil, so be sure that the one you purchase is compatible with the iPad that you purchase. Be sure to score some extra replacement tips while you are there!

Case: iBlason Covers

I will be the first to admit that I go through covers often, because my mood shifts so much. This company makes some of my favorite designs. The case folds to create a stand, really helpful for propping it up just the littlest bit to draw easier (and to watch videos easier too!) It has a spot to store your pencil and a screen protector built in. They come in a variety of sizes and colors, so you are sure to find something that you love!

Favorite Resources:

Brushes:
The app comes with a ton of brushes standard, and there is a lot that you can do with them. You don't ever have to purchase another brush if you don't want to. But if you decide that you DO here are some of my favorite  places to visit!

DesignCuts

This is the most incredible website out there in my opinion! The more that you purchase the bigger the discount, so once you hit 5 items in your cart you are saving 50% off EVERYTHING!

Gumroad

It takes a little hunting to find the brushes that you want, but it is so worth it! The Animal Stamps by Art with Flo, the Alcohol Inks by Alaina Jensen and the foliage and cloud brushes are to die for. Some brushes are free, others cost a few dollars.

Etsy

Etsy is another fantastic source for Procreate brushes and textures. My favorite seller is CreatewithProcreate who has some of the coolest galaxy and tree brushes ever! There is something for everyone - lettering, painting, portraits... you name it and you are pretty likely to find it. Many sellers offer discounts for multiple items too!
